Description

Enjoy a small-group guided hike in the Alaska Rainforest! You will see the variety of plants in Alaska's rainforest and learn traditional medicinal uses. View giant sitka spruce trees, cedars, eagles, salmon, and bears in season. Ketchikan has the best to offer in the forest due to its mild year round temperatures. The total distance covered is about 3 miles over gently rolling terrain. No special gear or footwear necessary but comfortable walking shoes. This trip includes a 15 minute sightseeing drive through the city. On the return leg, your guide will offer dining and recreation suggestions. Bottled water and a granola snack will be provided. This hike is typically in groups of 12 or less.

After meeting your small-group on the dock, you'll be driven by private van to the wilderness trailhead. Located in a remote location, you will hike on an unpaved, mostly level wilderness trail with no steps. You don’t need special footwear. The peace of the rainforest surroundings is yours while you admire the ancient forest and giant trees of the Tongass National Forest.

You will walk approximately 3 miles with stops for photos while your guide interprets the natural environment. Escape the crowds, lines, noise, and civilization. Your first stop is at a meadow, where you'll identify unusual plants and flowers. You'll then walk to a waterfall, where a viewing platform allows you to participate in the abundant water and wildlife. Afterwards, walk about 20 minutes more beside the rushing waters to the second viewing platform, directly above the clear waters. Learn about early Native American traditions. As giant ancient trees (some over 600 years old) surround and tower above you, touch them and imagine their history across the years. Your guide will show you secrets from the forest and lead you to the best viewing spots.

Please remember to take your SeaPass card (provided onboard the ship) and photo identification when in port. Wear clothing appropriate to the weather conditions, as this tour operates in rain and sunshine. Dress in layers. Comfortable, sensible footwear is recommended - boots are not necessary.

Please note: Participants must be between 8 and 80 years old, and be able to walk and stand continuously for 2 hours with occasional breaks.
